How much maintenance does a wood deck need?
Plan on regular work. Fiberon says a wood deck should get its first coat of finish once it's installed, then a new coat every one to two years. That adds up to a fair amount of time and effort. Between coats, keep an eye out for the problems wood is prone to.
- First finish: soon after the deck is built.
- Refinish: roughly every 1–2 years, according to Fiberon.
- Watch for: mold, decay and insects, all of which can affect wood decks.
Does composite decking need staining, sealing or painting?
Not for staining or painting. Fiberon likens composite to prefinished flooring: the boards arrive as a finished product, so you never sand, stain or paint them. Routine care is just a wash with soap and water from time to time.
- Sanding, staining or painting: not required, per Fiberon.
- Routine care: soap and water now and then.
- The maker says wood-plastic composite won't splinter, split, crack or rot.
What upkeep costs each year
By Fiberon's numbers, the yearly gap is large. These averages come from a composite manufacturer, so treat them as a rough guide, not a price for your deck.
- Wood deck upkeep: about $450–$850 per year on average, per Fiberon.
- Composite deck upkeep: about $5–$15 per year, per Fiberon.
- Lifespan: Fiberon says wood decks have a shorter lifespan than composite.

Common questions
How often should I refinish a wood deck?
Fiberon puts it at roughly every one to two years, after a first coat applied when the deck is built.
Do I need to stain or paint composite decking?
No. Fiberon says composite boards arrive as a finished product, so sanding, staining and painting aren't part of the routine. Just wash them with soap and water occasionally.
Is composite cheaper to own than wood?
Pressure-treated wood may cost less to buy. But Fiberon estimates wood upkeep at $450–$850 a year on average, compared with $5–$15 for composite.
